On the DVD interviews with the Coen Bros., they say they just wanted to do a shaggy dog l.a. story like Raymond Chandler, who's own stories (esp. the Big Sleep) made no sense. But still the beauty: Chandler: "she was the kind of blonde who'd make a bishop kick out a stained glass window." The Coen's genius is that there were no plots.
